The Old Fashioned is a very easy and quick drink to make that is sure to impress your guests this holiday season.
The Old Fashioned is a very old school cocktail that dates back to the late 1800s, where it is claimed to have been invented at a bar in Kentucky.
The drink lost some popularity over the years, but thanks to the AMC television show Mad Men, it was brought back into popularity in the 2000s.
You don't need any fancy bar equipment to make this drink, which makes it a great cocktail to have in your repertoire. But if you do have bar equipment, it will make things a little easier.
Of course there's many different ways to make an Old Fashioned, but this is the way we're making it today.
What you need:
Mixing Glass (any large glass will do)
Bar Spoon (any spoon will do)
Hawthorne Strainer (or anything to strain your drink)
Muddler (or something with a blunt end)
Jigger (or measuring glass)
Angostura Bitters (available at many grocery stores)
Granulated Sugar
Ice
Whiskey (whatever is your favorite)
Orange (for garnish)
Peeler (a knife will do)
Rocks Glass
Step One:
Get your mixing Glass and put a bar spoon of sugar into it.
Step Two:
Add 2 dashes of Angostura Bitters to the sugar.
Step Three:
Use to Muddler to middle the sugar and the bitters until the sugar has dissolved.
If needed, add a few dashes of water to help dissolve the sugar.
Step Four:
Add ice to your mixing Glass, and use your jigger to measure 2oz of your whiskey and pour over the ice.
Step Five:
STIR! STIR! STIR!
You will want to stir for about 15-20 seconds to make sure you dissolve the sugar that hasn't dissolved, cool down the drink, and dilute it.
Step Six:
Get your rocks Glass and but ice in it. I prefer to use one large ice cube.
Put your strainer on top of the mixing Glass and pour the liquid into your rocks Glass.
Step Seven:
Get your Peeler and your orange and peel a nice big strip of it making sure not to get too much of the pith on it.
Step Eight:
There are oils in the orange peel!
Squeeze the peel in half OVER the drink to express the oils onto the drink and glass.
Then rub the peel on the rim of the glass so you'll really be able to smell and taste the orange oils.
Twist the peel and put it in the drink.
Step Nine:
Serve the drink, impress your friends and family, and most importantly ENJOY!
