Maple Old Fashioned

The Old Fashioned is a super simple cocktail dating back to the early 1800’s, when the word ‘cocktail’ was invented, calling for spirit, water, bitters, and sugar. Over the years people started adding orange curaçao, absinthe, and other liqueurs, but when the original recipe came back into popularity in the 1870’s it was named the Old Fashioned.

But for this cocktail we are replacing the sugar with maple syrup!

We will get the sweetness that the sugar brings, and add that amazing maple flavour that you can only get from 100% Ontario Pure Maple Syrup.

You always want to start by using a good spirit, if you wouldn't sip on it by itself it has no business being in this cocktail. For this recipe I decided to go local and use The Durham Distillery’s 3-Grain Spirit, it has a nice easy drinkability with a smooth finish, plus I enjoy supporting local.

You are also going to get some 100% Ontario Pure Maple Syrup, you don’t want to use that table syrup that is over produced with corn syrup, high fructose, and fake maple flavouring. The maple flavour from the syrup is going to mix really well with the flavours of your whiskey.

So let’s stop talking about it and get down to business!

Ingredients

  • 2.0oz Rye Whiskey or Bourbon

  • 0.5oz 100% Ontario Pure Maple Syrup

  • 2 Dashes Angostura Bitters

  • Garnish: Orange Peel

Step One:

Get a mixing glass and fill it with ice, then add your 2oz of Rye or Bourbon.

Step Two:

Add 0.5oz Maple Syrup to your mixing glass.

Step Three:

Add 2 dashes of Angostura Bitters to the mixing glass.

Step Four:

Stir your cocktail for about 15 seconds, this will chill your cocktail as well as dilute it the perfect amount.

Step Five:

Grab a rocks glass and fill it with ice, then strain your cocktail into your glass.

Step Six:

Get the peel from an orange and express its oils over the glass and drop it in.

Serve and enjoy!
